A Comparative Study on the Failure Criteria for Predicting the Damage Initiation in Fiber-Reinforced Composites

In this research, the maximum stress, Hashin, Puck, LaRC03, and Northwestern University (NU) criteria are analyzed based literature data, analytical results obtained using a MATLAB program numerical from an Abaqus finite-element model. The applicability reliability of these failure for predicting damage in thermoplastic laminates evaluated on results. According to results, stress criterion provided most conservative prediction, but Hashin gave reasonable sensible outcomes at acceptable running time. Puck LaRC03 showed more accurate predictions, longer times.
